I've been listening to Natalie Prass a lot lately. I discovered her since Ryan Adams can't stop talking about her on Twitter (and yes, I know the rumor that they might be dating). She also has been touring with him and tonight they're in the Arizona. So let's learn a little bit more about Miss Prass because I'm intrigued...
A protege of Jenny Lewis, Prass started in Boston at the Berklee College of Music, where she was a student for one year and moved to Nashville after that. It wasn't until an iPhone recorded demo that Lewis heard in Nashville, that she got her big break, playing keyboards in Lewis' touring band during the Acid Tongue years.
Her debut self titled album came out in January of this year and it's a 1970's soulful country throwback. It reminds me a lot of Dolly Parton in the beginning of her career, mixed with Dionne Warwick (one of her biggest influences,) or Gladys Knight. It's a very distinct sound, especially with Prass' Disney princess-like tone, which I love.
She's signed to Spacebomb records, an independent label coming out of Richmond, Virginia (where she's from originally,) and also has a distribution deal with Columbia records. Apparently, this album was made two years ago and was distributed locally by Spacebomb before Columbia picked it up for a nationwide release.
Honestly, that's all I can find about Natalie Prass right now but I encourage to give her a listen. Her debut is available on iTunes and Spotify now!
